Millom travelled to Widnes to face North West Counties Division One outfit Moorfield with possibly their youngest ever team, containing seven under 18-s players. Top try scorer Graham Lupton had a score disallowed in the first minute and from then on it was always going to be close.

On 17 minutes Tom Sibley put Millom ahead with a well-worked try, but the visitors were having to work overtime to keep the home side out. On 24 minutes a planned move saw prop forward Paul Davies go in for a converted try to give the home side a 6-4 lead at half time.

Four minutes into the second half a great break y Andrew Dawson released Graham Lupton. He put a clever kick in for scrum half Nathan Mossop to gather and score a try that he also added the extras to, to put Millom 10-6 ahead.

On 58 minutes a try by fullback Danny Wood, which he also converted, set the stage for a giant killing act. But Millom were not to be outdone and all the young players were showing up well. with Matty Palmer, Andrew Dawson and Ross Brooks having their best games in a first team shirt.

Millom attacked the line to wipe out the two-point deficit but it took a great break from Dawson to set up the next score. He fed the backing-up Dane Kelly and the big forward went in for what proved to be the match winning try. The conversion by Mossop gave Millom a four point win.

League Express:

Millom managed a narrow 16-12 success at Widnes Moorfield, who came so close to creating an upset against the National Conference League second division championship chasers.

Moorfield stunned their visitors with a Paul Davies try and Danny Wood goal to take the lead, but the visitors hit back with a Tom Sibley try and had to settle for a 6-4 deficit at half time.

It was end to end stuff and a second home try and conversion from Wood had an upset on the cards. But Millom dig deep and when Nathan Mossop went in for a try to cut the home advantage to two points, a last minute try from Dane Kelly and a goal from Mossop won the day for Millom and left Moorfield agonisingly on the wrong side of the result.

League Weekly:

Gallant Moorfield of the Mark Norris Construction Ltd North West Counties First Division, almost pulled off the shock of the round against the NCL Division Two championship aspirants.

The Widnes outfit went into the last minute 12-10 ahead, only for the Cumbrians to snatch a dramatic victory when Dane Kelly shot over at the death.

Nathan Mossop, who had already scored a try and a goal to haul Millom back from 12-4 down, added the extras to help send the relieved Maroons, who are strong enough to go all the way to the final at Flyde in May, through to the next round.

The plaudits though, belong to Moorfield, for whom prop Paul Davies continued his run of magnificent form with a series of barraging drives. Davies, in fact, put the home side ahead early in the first half, Danny Wood adding the extras.

Millom, perhaps bolstered by the intensity of their own league competition, issued a warning of what would happen at the business end of the game by scoring on the stroke of half time, dangerous second row Tom Sibley crossing the whitewash.

Moorfield, however, confirmed their mettle when Wood nipped over and added the conversion. But a giant killing feat proved to be off the agenda as the Cumbrians bounced back in remarkable style.
