MILLOM’S unbeaten start to the season
came to an abrupt end.
In-form Milford Marlins, strengthened by several
players from the pro ranks, inflicted a first defeat in nine outings
on the Woollybacks.
The visitors scored first when the prolific
Paul Evans backed up a brilliant 70-metre break by Warren Lloyd
to go in for a try that he also goaled, 0-6.
Within five minutes the home side were level
when centre Matty Hayes made the Maroons pay for some poor tackling
with a converted try and he repeated the act on 17 minutes to
give his team a 12-6 lead.
On 23 minutes, a brilliant break by fullback
Steve Dawson almost brought a try, but it was the Leeds side who
went further in front with a Watts penalty.
Three minutes later centre Chris Smith added
to Millom’s problems with a converted try, 20-6.
Good play by Paul Evans and Tom Sibley on
the Milford line saw Sibley go in for a try that was converted
to narrow the gap to 20-12.
Millom proved their own worst enemies when
two minutes later bad tackling allowed substitute Jon Wainhouse
to go over for converted try. Right on half-time, good passing
in the backs saw Warren Lloyd go in for a try that kept Millom
in contention.
Unfortunately Evans’ kick struck the
crossbar to leave the interval score at 16-26.
On 57 minutes a great break from Steve Dawson
led to Matty Palmer taking a long pass from Paul Evans to bring
the score within four points.
At this point the Maroons seemed to be well
on top and were unlucky again when Lloyd lost possession over
the line.
The last 10 minutes proved to be disastrous
for Millom as the home team finished the stronger with three tries,
one of which was converted to give a final score of 40-22.
Centre Midge Dixon was chosen as man-of-the-match
by the Milford coaching staff. |
