MILLOM made the long journey to York in this opening game and came away with two hard-earned points.

The home side took a five minute lead when some sloppy tackling allowed Luke Judson to romp over for a converted try.

Both teams were making mistakes and on 17 minutes Millom were on level terms when Paul Carter charged down a kick and re-gathered to score between the posts and give Evans an easy conversion.

Millom were now getting more into the game and good passing along the line saw Warren Lloyd go in for a try in the corner.

A 32nd minute penalty by Evans saw the maroons six points in front but this was quickly wiped out when missed tackles allowed the Heworth prop to charge over and the successful kick brought the scores level at 12-12.

As half-time approached good passing put centre Midge Dixon in for a try that Evans goaled to see the interval score 12-18.

Luke Judson went in for his second try just after half-time and the goal brought the scores level again.

With both sides finding the bright sunshine hard going it was Millom who again took the lead when a Paul Evans cross kick was knocked down to Curtis Mossop, who crashed over for a converted try, 18-24.

With play going from end to end the York side drew level on 56 minutes when hooker Joe Murphy scored and Potter goaled, 24-24.

With Potter and Evans exchanging penalties with 10 minutes remaining it was Graham Lupton who gave Millom the spoils when he went over from the play-the-ball in a game that could have gone either way.

Prop Craig Wilson was chosen by the Heworth coach as Millom’s man-of-the-match.

League Express:

A try six minutes from time by hooker Graham Lupton, with stand off Paul Evans kicking his sixth goal of the afternoon, helped the Cumbrians edge an entertainingly fluctuating affair.

Heworth, however, while often on level terms, were only in front for a 12-minute period in the first half after having opened the scoring with a try by loose forward Luke Judson and the first of scrum half Ben Potter's five goals.

The York outfit relied thereafter on touchdowns by prop Sam Clarke, Judson and hooker Joe Murphy to keep in touch with Millom, who were never more than six points to the good.

Prop Paul Carter, substitute Warren Lloyd, centre Anthony Dixon and Curtis Mossop crossed for the Maroons who, like Heworth, are once more targeting promotion.
