MILLOM travelled up the coast to take on rivals Egremont knowing they were in for a tough time.

In atrocious conditions, Millom played down the slope and took an early lead with a Paul Evans penalty.

For the first quarter the visitors were having most of the play, with their strong pack putting the home side under pressure. They were rewarded when powerful prop Craig Wilson crashed over for their first try, which Evans converted.

Egremont came back strongly and on 23 minutes loose forward Brocklebank pulled four points back with a well-taken try.

From the restart a brilliant 50-metre run from fullback Warren Lloyd put Millom back on the attack and a further penalty gave them a six-point lead.

With half-time approaching, a break by Evans was backed up by Graham Lupton who raced in to give them a 16-4 interval lead.

Helped by the slope Egremont must have thought that they could turn the game around, but the Maroons showed why they have the best defensive record in the conference to keep their line intact.

Another Evans penalty increased the lead to 14 points and it was no surprise when Graham Lupton forced his way over for his second try.

Despite the conditions, Millom were still playing some good rugby and on the half-hour a long pass from Paul Evans released young winger Matty Palmer, who cleverly drew the fullback and passed back inside to the supporting Graham Lupton who went in for his hat-trick from 40 metres.

The conversion was Evans’ 500th goal in the Conference.

From the restart Craig Wilson made a brilliant 60-metre break to put the home side under more pressure, scrum-half Nathan Mossop going over to complete the scoring at 32-4.

It was another workmanlike display with everyone playing their part. Craig Wilson and Warren Lloyd had big games, but three-try Graham Lupton received the man-of-the-match award.

League Express:

NCL joint Second Division leaders Millom piled on the agony for Egremont with a power-packed display that didn't quite bag enough points to take top spot on a better scoring average from Normanton.

A Paul Evans penalty and Craig Wilson try, goaled by Evans, got Millom off to a flyer before John Paul Brocklebank went in for a home try. But with Evans adding two more goals and Graham Lupton grabbing a second Millom touchdown off Evans superb break, it was the visitors leading 16-4 at the break.

In the second half Millom dominated, despite the efforts of the home side's Paul Telford to stem the tide.

A Paul Evans penalty was followed by two more Lupton tries to compltete his hat-trick before Nathan Mossop brought the curtain down on a commanding Millom show with their fifth try to which Evans added six goals.

Cumberland News:

EGREMONT, meanwhile, were beaten 32-4 at home by MILLOM in DIVISION TWO. The south Cumbrians, second in the table, dented Rangers’ promotion hopes with a powerful display in which Graham Lupton scored a hat-trick.

Millom were already eight points to the good, through a try by Craig Wilson and two Paul Evans goals, before John Paul Brocklebank scored Egremont’s only touchdown.

The visitors went on to shatter Rangers’ four-match winning run on their own patch with Lupton’s three tries, Nathan Mossop closing the account six minutes from time and Evans totalling six goals.

League Weekly:

The Maroons returned from the tough trip up the Cumbria coast with two handy points to stay behind Normanton only on points difference.

Egremont, who have lost their last two games, still have promotion ambitions but were undone on this occasion by a hat-trick by Graham Lupton.

Lupton's first try, two minutes before the break, helped Millom to a 14-4 interval lead and it was one-way traffic in the second period, Lupton adding two more touchdowns and Nathan Mossop also crossing.

Paul Evans, who had converted Craig Wilson's first half score, completed a six goal haul.

Rangers, for all their efforts, were limited to a touchdown by John Paul Brocklebank.
