MILLOM travelled up the coast to take on
rivals Egremont knowing they were in for a tough time.
In atrocious conditions, Millom played down
the slope and took an early lead with a Paul Evans penalty.
For the first quarter the visitors were having
most of the play, with their strong pack putting the home side
under pressure. They were rewarded when powerful prop Craig Wilson
crashed over for their first try, which Evans converted.
Egremont came back strongly and on 23 minutes
loose forward Brocklebank pulled four points back with a well-taken
try.
From the restart a brilliant 50-metre run
from fullback Warren Lloyd put Millom back on the attack and a
further penalty gave them a six-point lead.
With half-time approaching, a break by Evans
was backed up by Graham Lupton who raced in to give them a 16-4
interval lead.
Helped by the slope Egremont must have thought
that they could turn the game around, but the Maroons showed why
they have the best defensive record in the conference to keep
their line intact.
Another Evans penalty increased the lead to
14 points and it was no surprise when Graham Lupton forced his
way over for his second try.
Despite the conditions, Millom were still
playing some good rugby and on the half-hour a long pass from
Paul Evans released young winger Matty Palmer, who cleverly drew
the fullback and passed back inside to the supporting Graham Lupton
who went in for his hat-trick from 40 metres.
The conversion was Evans’ 500th goal
in the Conference.
From the restart Craig Wilson made a brilliant
60-metre break to put the home side under more pressure, scrum-half
Nathan Mossop going over to complete the scoring at 32-4.
It was another workmanlike display with everyone
playing their part. Craig Wilson and Warren Lloyd had big games,
but three-try Graham Lupton received the man-of-the-match award. |
