Millom may have been from two divisions lower
in the National Conference League than their high flying visitors,
but they gave them one heck of a game before East Hull progressed
into the next round.
The home side will rue early missed chances before East Hull finally
opened the scoring with a 40-metre scoring run from stand off Gary
Blanchard, to which he added the extras after 31 minutes of a tense
midfield battle.
Both teams were working hard with Craig Wilson, Graham and Paul
Lupton and Paul Carter the pick of the home side, whilst Shaun Painter,
Shaun Cooke and Blanchard were East Hull's best.
But on the stroke of half time Millom did manage to open their account
when Paul Evans intercepted a stray ball and raced 70 metres for
a try he could not goal, as East Hull led 6-4 at half time.
With the influential Nathan Mossop and Phil Jackson both off injured,
Millom were up against it, but they battled on and took the lead
on 58 minutes when Graham Lupton and Bradd Crellin combined to put
Matthew Palmer in for a try and a 10-6 lead after Evans had added
the goal points.
But Premier Division high flyers showed their class to take the
game in the final quarter with three tries. The first came when
Liam Reid stepped in for a Blanchard-goaled try for the lead, and
then Blanchard claimed his second try, to which he also added the
goal points.
In the last minute Martin Johnson completed the scoring and allthough
Millom were out, they were far from down. |

The National Conference League
title hopefuls, currently second in the table, were pushed all
the way before accounting for a Maroons outfit battling for promotion
from Division 2.
Millom were 10-6 ahead as the game entered the final quarter,
thanks to a try and goal for stand off Paul Evans and a touchdown
by substitute Matthew Palmer.
But Easts, previously limited to a try and goal by stand off Gary
Blanchard,, prevailed with three unanswered touchdowns.
Loose forwrd Liam Reid levelled matters with the first score,
Blanchard forged a six-point lead with his second try and the
conversion, and a hard earned win was ratified when centre Martin
Johnson crossed at the death.
