With several regulars missing through injury,
Millom travelled to Yorkshire wirh eight players who were 19 years
old or younger, but still came away with a splendid victory.
Right from the kick off Millom played attacking
rugby and were rewarded as early as the sixth minute when prolific
try scorer Graham Lupton went over to give them a four point lead.
The home team pulled two points back with
a penalty five minutes later, but it was the maroons whot ook
control for the rest of the half.
After some slick passing Graham Lupton made
the break to put Tom Sibley in for a try which Paul Evans converted,
to give them a lead of 10-2 after 22 minutes.
With the forwards bossing up front and the
speedy backs causing all sorts of problems, it was only a matter
of time before Millom added to the score and it came when ex-Barrow
player Paul Lupton stormed over in the 37th minute for a try which
Evans improved.
From the kick off Millom attacked again and
a cross-kick from Evans on the last tackle was taken by young
winger Ross Brookes, who did well to go over in the corner and
give his side a 20-2 lead at the interval.
Brighouse came out for the second half determined
to get back into the game, but it was Millom who went further
ahead with an Evans penalty, and 20 minutes into the half a good
break by Paul Lupton was backed up by debutant Elliott Miller
who took the pass and went 60 metres to score and excellent try
which was converted to give them a 28-2 lead.
Within minutes good play by Evans, Joe Shaw
and Midge Dixon saw prop Paul Middleton go in for a well deserved
try, to which Evans added the extras.
Right on full-time scrum half Martin Luxford
went in for a consolation try for the home side, but it was seven
wins out of seven for the jubilant maroons. Paul Evans was chosen
as the opponents man-of-the-match. |
