MILLOM went to the top of Conference Division Two after defeating neighbours Askam.

But the Villagers, despite being at the other end of the table, still put up a gutsy performance, with prop Jamie Butler leading the way.

A Graham Lupton penalty gave the home side an early lead and Askam were having to defend strongly, but a break by winger Steve Dawson on 14 minutes led to a try for Tom Sibley.

This was followed four minutes later with one from skipper Lupton, backing up a great break from fullback Warren Lloyd. With Lupton adding the extras it was looking as if Millom were going to walk away with it.

But to the visitors’ credit, they were defending well, with Butler, Matt Parkinson and Mark Tyson leading the way.

On 27 minutes Millom went further in front when stand-off Nathan Mossop made a great break that paved the way for Lupton to go in for his second try, which he also converted.

Within minutes good passing across the line saw Lloyd join the line and put young winger Matty Palmer over for a try that gave Millom a 22-0 interval lead.

Eight minutes into the second half great runs from Craig Wilson and Sibley led to Dawson going over for an unconverted try to give them a 26-point advantage.

Playing with a strong wind behind them, Askam went close several times, but it was the home team who scored next when Mossop went in and this was followed minutes later with a four-pointer from prop Craig Wilson to make it 34-0.

With time running out Millom attacked the Askam line and good play saw the ball go to another of Millom’s promising youngsters, Elliot Miller, and he went in from 30 metres to complete the scoring and put the Maroons top of the table.

Half-backs Ross Brooks and Mossop got the man-of-the-match awards.

League Express:

Second-from-top versus bottom and it went the way you would have expected, even though Askam made Millom work extremely hard for the points in this local derby.

Millom’s first points came courtesy of a Graham Lupton penalty goal, before Tom Sibley touched down for the opening try from a Steve Dawson break. Nathan Mossop was running the show for Millom, whilst Jamie Butler, Matt Parkinson and Norman Tyson led the Askam resistance. But it was two tries and two goals from Graham Lupton that firmly put Millom in the driving seat before a Matthew Palmer try gave the home side a 22-0 lead at half-time.

Millom opened the second half with some superb runs from Craig Wilson and Sibley, for Dawson to score. Mossop claimed a try of his own before Elliott Miller and Wilson completed the home try tally to keep them neck and neck with Normanton Knights at the top of the second division.

League Weekly:

The Maroons are back on top of the section – on point’s difference of only seven from Normanton – after easing through the Barrow derby.

Askam, back on the bottom, had little to offer other than a huge amount of effort which augers well for the future, prop Jamie Butler typifying the visitors’ spirit.

Millom who lacked stand off Paul Evans, were well served by hooker Graham Lupton, who closed with 14 points from two tries and three goals.

Second row Tom Sibley and right winger Matty Palmer crossed in the first half to help the home side to a 22-point interval lead, while left winger Steve Dawson, stand off Nathan Mossop, prop Craig Wilson and substitute Elliott Miller nipped over in the last 40 minutes.
